Aaron and Atock stood as the room emptied of nobles and captains. The evening’s briefing had gone as many of the others, with the exception that the King had thanked the two of them for their quick thinking at the eastern gates.

Aaron would have been happy to leave with the other Captains and leaders, but Atock had a question that he wanted to pose. His question wasn’t meant for the king necessarily, but any of the other high-ranking lords would do.

They began making their way toward the table when the room was sufficiently clear for the them to approach.

The king had his head bent close to Lord Steel and several other lords were involved in the conversation. Neither of the Guardians wanted to interrupt that meeting.

Dagan sat at the end of the table, looking older and more tired than they had ever seen him. He glanced up at their approach and he didn’t even have something hateful to say to them. “You two still here?” Perhaps it was more correct to say that he didn’t have anything too hateful to say to them.

“Yes, we’re still here,” Atock answered. “I’ve got a question about that oil that I dumped on the giants.”

Dagan leaned back in his chair and sighed. He didn’t look too pleased, but then again, when did he ever?

“It seems to me that I should have known about those barrels of oil. The gates nearly fell and it would have been a shame if the goblins won with our salvation going unused.”

Dagan nodded. “True, but the Thane that’s in charge of that section of wall,” he waved his hand absently, “I forget his name. He knew about it.”

“Yes, but an arrow nearly ended his life. Once again, I should have known,” Atock said. This time he spoke a bit more forcefully. “If not me, then at least others who could have put the plan into action.” He tilted his head to one side, as if a thought had just occurred to him. “Do the other gates have similar barrels?”

Dagan nodded. “They do. And the ones at the eastern gates are being refilled.”

“And are there other secret plans?” Aaron asked. It was the first thing he’d said since they’d approached Dagan. He agreed with Atock but he didn’t particularly want to piss off the old sorcerer. The gods only knew what the old bastard could do to him.

“Secret plans?” Dagan repeated the words as if they were an accusation. “I already told you that the Thane knew about them. I’m sure he shared them with some of his supporters.”

“His supporters who were more interested in getting him off the wall than about stopping the attack.” Atock’s voice was rising and he was clearly getting irritated. “Is there a reason that more of us weren’t told?”

Aaron started. He didn’t like Atock’s suggestion that they purposefully hadn’t been told about the contingency plans. If true, he could understand Atock’s frustration.

“Is everything all right?”

Atock and Aaron turned to see Lord Steel standing just behind them.
